{"id":1903,"date":"2023-03-03T23:32:41","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T22:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vminded.com\/?p=1903"},"modified":"2023-03-15T10:05:41","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T09:05:41","slug":"leveraging-nfs-storage-in-vmware-cloud-on-aws-part-1-fsx-for-netapp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vminded.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/03\/leveraging-nfs-storage-in-vmware-cloud-on-aws-part-1-fsx-for-netapp\/","title":{"rendered":"Leveraging NFS storage in VMware Cloud on AWS &#8211; Part 1 (FSx for NetApp)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>VMware Cloud on AWS <\/strong>relies on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-Cloud-on-AWS\/services\/com.vmware.vsphere.vmc-aws-manage-data-center-vms.doc\/GUID-3F81EF2B-54A1-49C3-A47B-6C5F6E2E9BEC.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vSAN<\/a><\/strong> Storage, VMware\u2019s software-defined storage solution, for all data storage requirements. vSAN provides a distributed storage within each cluster in the SDDC which size depends on the instance model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, each vSAN clusters in an SDDC expose two datastores that are usable to store both management VMs (exclusively used by VMware) and Production workloads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, the cluster storage capacity (and data redundancy) scale with the number of nodes in the SDDC. However, there are certain scenarios that require additional storage but not the associated cost of adding additional compute nodes. With these \u2018storage-heavy\u2019 scenarios, a more optimal<strong> TCO<\/strong> can be met by reducing the number of hosts while leveraging an external cloud storage solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"718\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/vminded.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-04-at-17.28.16.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vminded.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-04-at-17.28.16.png 718w, https:\/\/vminded.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-04-at-17.28.16-300x184.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently two options to add an external NFS storage to a VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC cluster:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:14.2%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/fsx\/latest\/ONTAPGuide\/what-is-fsx-ontap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon FSx<sup>TM<\/sup> for NetApp ONTAP<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>VMware <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/vmc-flex-storage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cloud Flex Storage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>VMware Cloud on AWS support adding external storage starting with version 1.20. A the time of this writing, adding an external storage is only supported with <strong>Standard <\/strong>(non-stretched) <strong>Clusters<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog post I am going to cover the first option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fsx-for-netapp-ontap-solution\">FSx for NetApp ONTAP solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FSx for NetApp ONTAP<\/strong> is a variant of the already existing <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/fsx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon FSx<\/a><sup>TM<\/sup> based on the NetApp ONTAP storage operating system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution itself offers the capability to launch and run a fully managed ONTAP file systems in the AWS Cloud. This file system offers a high-performance SSD file storage (with sub-millisecond latency) that can be used by many OS like Windows or Linux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One big advantages in the context of VMware Cloud on AWS is that it fully supports the existing <strong>NetApp SnapMirror<\/strong> replication solution to easily replicate or migrate existing on-premises data from ONTAP deployments to the AWS Cloud. It also supports the <strong>FexClone<\/strong> feature which allows for instantaneously creating a clone of the volumes in your file system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple protocol are supported to access the Filesystem like NFS, SMB or iSCSI (for shared block storage). Using it as a new datastore to VMware Cloud on AWS requires to use the <strong>NFS <\/strong>protocol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each filesystem is delivered with two tiers of storage: primary storage (with SSD levels of performance) and capacity pool storage (using a fully elastic storage that scale to petabytes) with automated tiering to reduce costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each FSx file system can offer multiple GB\/s of throughput and hundreds of thousands of IOPS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, a file system&#8217;s SSD storage provides the following level of performance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:14.2%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>3072 IOPS per TiB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>768 MB\/s per TiB<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Each file system has a throughput capacity that determines the level of I\/O. Higher levels of capacity and IOPS can be offered by adding more memory and NVMe Storage when the filesystem is created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSx for NetApp ONTAP provides <strong>highly available<\/strong> and <strong>durable storage<\/strong> with fully managed <strong>backups <\/strong>and support for <strong>Cross-Region DR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSx for NetApp ONTAP as a datastore is exclusively sold by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and it provides lifecycle management of the FSx for NetApp ONTAP file system (security updates, upgrades, and patches). It is going to be the right solution if you are already consuming NetApp storage on-premises as it will reduce the risks and complexity by using a familiar technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Integration with VMware Cloud on AWS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>VMware Cloud on AWS integration with FSx for NetApp ONTAP is a jointly engineered option. It provides an AWS-managed external NFS datastore built on the NetApp&#8217;s ONTAP file system that can be attached to a cluster in an SDDC.  Each mount point exported by the FSx on ONTAP service is going to be treated as a separate datastore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSxN allows for mounting up to <strong>4 vSphere datastores t<\/strong>hrough NFS in the VMC cluster. Attaching an NFS Datastore is only supported over <strong>NFS v3<\/strong> protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"704\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/vminded.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-04-at-17.28.08.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1973\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vminded.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-04-at-17.28.08.png 704w, https:\/\/vminded.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-04-at-17.28.08-300x198.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution can de deployed in a dedicated VPC in the following availability  model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:14.2%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Single-AZ<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multi-AZ<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The multi-AZ deployment is designed to provide continuous availability to data in the event of an AZ failure. This is supported only over the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.vmware.com\/cloud\/2020\/09\/28\/vmware-transit-connect-simplifying-networking-scale-vmware-cloud-aws-sddcs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transit Connect<\/a><\/strong> (vTGW) and requires an <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-Cloud-on-AWS\/services\/com.vmware.vmc-aws-operations\/GUID-C957DBA7-16F5-412B-BB72-15B49B714723.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SDDC Group<\/a> to be created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An AWS Elastic Network Interface (ENI)  connects the vTGW in a newly deployed VPC where the FSx for NetApp ONTAP service will be attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to mention that <strong>connectivity between the ESXi hosts and the Transit Connect<\/strong> <strong>is not crossing the NSX Edge<\/strong> (Tier-0) deployed in the VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC. Remember that SDDC Groups are a way to group SDDCs together for ease of management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\"
