When I look back I realise I have been working at VMware for about 9 months and I have spent a tremendous amount of time dealing with a high number of requests, questions and issues with my customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One that particularly stands out is around integrating VMC on AWS<\/a> with a Firewall hosted in a transit VPC<\/a><\/strong> for security purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of my customer recently was asking me if it was possible to create a VPN from VMC to a WatchguardTM<\/sup> Firebox Cloud<\/a><\/strong> Firewall. So I decided I would give it a try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this guide, I will first show you how to set up a route-based VPN<\/strong> from the Watchguard<\/strong>TM<\/sup> firewall to an AWS VGW<\/strong> in a native VPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last part, I will show how to configure an IPSEC route-based VPN<\/strong> from VMC on AWS<\/strong> to the same instance of Watchguard<\/strong>TM<\/sup> firewall hosted in a transit VPC<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 1 -Configure an AWS transit VPC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let me give first some definition: A virtual private cloud (VPC<\/a><\/strong>) is a virtual network dedicated to your AWS account. It is logically isolated from other virtual networks in the AWS Cloud. You can launch your AWS resources, such as Amazon EC2<\/a> instances, into your VPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, I need to configure an AWS VPC<\/strong> with at least two subnets<\/strong>. It’s possible to use the VPC Wizard to create a VPC<\/strong> with public<\/em> and private<\/em> subnets or create it manually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you choose the wizard, you will have to terminate the NAT instance<\/strong> that was automatically created for the VPC by the VPC Wizard because the instance of Firebox Cloud will provide NAT<\/strong> functions for subnets in this VPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will be using the manual method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create a new VPC<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

When I create a VPC, I must specify a range of IPv4 addresses for the VPC in the form of a Classless Inter-Domain Routing<\/strong> (CIDR) block. I decided to choose a CIDR<\/strong> block for my VPC of 172.30.0.0\/16<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I will have to Create a public subnet<\/strong> with a CIDR block equivalent to a subset of the VPC CIDR range:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose a CIDR block for your public subnet<\/strong> like 172.30.11.0\/24<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CREATE A PRIvate Subnet<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Next step is to Create a private subnet <\/strong>from the VPC CIDR range in the same zone as the public subnet (CIDR block of private subnet cannot overlap with public subnet<\/em>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose a CIDR block for your private subnet<\/strong> like 172.30.20.0\/24.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create an Internet Gateway<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We will now deploy an AWS Internet Gateway<\/a> <\/strong>(IGW) from the VPC Dashboard<\/strong>. From the VPC Dashboard, Click Internet Gateways<\/strong> menu on the left:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attach the new IGW<\/strong> to the transit VPC by clicking on the attach to VPC<\/strong> button and from the Actions drop-down menu, select the transit VPC and Click Attach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IGW<\/strong> is seen as attached to the VPC that was created:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create a Route Table<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Next, we will create a route table<\/strong> for the Transit VPC: from the VPC Dashboard, select Route Tables menu and Create Route<\/strong> table as shown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route table<\/strong> must be associated with the transit VPC as highlighted above. Once you provide a name <\/strong>for the route table and select<\/strong> the Transit VPC from drop-down menu, Click Create<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next step is to create a default route<\/strong> for the new transit VPC route table. Select the Routes<\/strong> tab and Click Edit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Add a 0.0.0.0\/0<\/strong> destination that point to the IGW previously created.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, from the same window, select the subnet associations<\/strong> tab and select the Edit<\/strong> Button and Select the public subnet <\/strong>created earlier. Once done, click Save<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next you are going to Create a native “spoke” VPC (this is a VPC attach to the firebox through a VPN where we will run some EC2<\/a><\/strong> instances to test access to the SDDC):<\/p>\n\n\n\n
